What We Watch For
The earliest stage: gums become inflamed, red, swollen, and may bleed when brushing. Fully preventable and reversible with good home care and regular cleanings.
Left untreated, plaque spreads below the gumline, breaking down the tissue and bone that support your teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss if unmanaged.

QUESTIONS from patients
On average, a yearly examination with the dentist and cleanings twice a year with the hygienist. Every mouth is different, and patients managing gum disease often do better every three to four months.
The examination is the dentist checking your teeth, gums and bite and reviewing X-rays for anything developing. The cleaning is the hygienist removing plaque and tartar that brushing cannot shift. They are separate appointments with separate fees, and most people need both.
It should not. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, so tell your hygienist and they will adjust. We can also use desensitising treatment or freezing if you need it. There is a TV above the chair, which more patients use than you would expect.
Common, but not normal. Bleeding usually means inflammation, the earliest stage of gum disease. At that stage it is fully reversible with proper home care and a professional cleaning. Left alone it can progress to bone loss, which is not reversible, so it is worth getting looked at.
