A custom guard is made from a scan of your own bite, so it fits precisely and distributes the force where it should go. Boil-and-bite guards from a pharmacy are approximate, tend to be bulky, and can shift during the night, which sometimes makes clenching worse rather than better.
Typically several years, though heavy grinders wear through them faster. Bring it to your checkups and we will tell you when it needs replacing.
If they play a contact sport, yes. A custom sport guard protects against chipped and knocked-out teeth and is considerably cheaper than treating the injury it prevents. Children in braces particularly benefit, since brackets can cut the lips on impact.
